Nothing that you perceive can be you

If the parts of a car are replaced one by one every day, would that be the same car or different? The cells of a human body are continuously getting replaced. So, is it the same body you have every day?

"Discover all that you are not - body, feelings, thoughts, time, space, this or that - nothing concrete or abstract which you perceive can be you." - Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj.

Where is then that person? - Brihadaranyaka Upanishad

When the speech of this dead person enters into the fire, breath into the air, the eye into the sun, the mind into the moon, the hearing into space, into the earth the body, into the ether the self, into the shrubs the hairs of the body, into the trees the hairs of the head, when the blood and the seed are deposited in the water, where is then that person? - Brihadaranyaka Upanishad

If the person is no more, what then is rebirth, heaven, or hell ?

"When the body is no more, the person disappears completely without return, only the witness remains and the Great Unknown." - Nisargadatta Maharaj

How do you and me see the same illusion?

If everything is an illusion, how do you and me see the same illusion? From the sun's perspective, sunrise and sunset does not exist; it is an illusion. But yet, people see sunsets. If you and me see a sunset from two different places, would that be the same illusion or different?

"When a number of people are asleep, each dreams his own dream. Only on awakening, the question of many different dreams arises, and dissolves when they are all seen as dreams, as something imagined." - Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj

I do not want meek and humble disciples

I do not want meek and humble disciples, I want them to be powerful, as I am. I do not make disciples, I make Gurus. - Nisargadatta Maharaj

Once you realise that the world is your own projection, you are free of it

Once you realise that the world is your own projection, you are free of it - Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj

This relative ‘knowledge’ merges in the no-knowing state of the Absolute

This relative ‘knowledge’ merges in the no-knowing state of the Absolute. This temporary condition of ‘I-know’ and ‘I-know-that-I-know’, then merges into that eternal state of ‘I-do-not-know’ and ‘I-do-not-know-that-I-do-not-know’. - Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj

Reincarnation exists only so long as there is ignorance

What is birth and death but the beginning and the ending of a stream of events in consciousness? It is all misunderstanding and misuse. Wake up, go beyond, live really. - Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj

Reincarnation exists only so long as there is ignorance. There is really no reincarnation at all, either now or before. Nor will there be any hereafter. This is the truth. - Sri Ramana Maharshi | Be As You Are – by David Godman (1985) ISBN 0-14-019062-7 - Chapter 18

Beyond the mind there is no such thing as “experience”

The brain interprets the senses and creates the effect of “knowing”. The very idea of your knowing - “that you know” - requires a body with a nervous system. Do you exist without this body ? If yes, how do you “know” then ? All your concepts are based on this body. How do you experience pleasure or pain when you are transported to heaven or hell ?

Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj: Beyond the mind there is no such thing as “experience”.

What happens to a person who dies without realizing the truth?

What happens to a person who dies without realizing the truth?
To whom does this question arise? For the realized, there are no persons and death. For the person, there is no realization either. The question itself is false. A ‘realized person’ is a paradox.

Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj : Indeed, there is no such thing as ‘enlightenment’. The apperception of this fact is itself enlightenment.

Is there any question of awakening for that flame?

See this flame of the cigarette lighter. It has appeared, it has disappeared. Is there any question of awakening for that flame? The cigarette lighter is the body; Consciousness is the flame. - Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj

Source of the consciousness is not in the brain

Source of the voice is not in the radio.
Source of the consciousness is not in the brain.

Nisargadatta Maharaj : Consciousness and unconsciousness, while in the body depend on the condition of the brain. But the self is beyond both, beyond the brain, beyond the mind. The fault of the instrument is no reflection on its user.

The doctrine that the world is made up of objects - Bernard d'Espagnat

"The doctrine that the world is made up of objects whose existence is independent of human consciousness turns out to be in conflict with quantum mechanics and with facts established by experiment."
Bernard d'Espagnat - (1921 – 2015) - French theoretical physicist, philosopher of science.

Once you realize that the world is your own projection, you are free of it. The entire manifested universe, exists only in consciousness. - Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj

There is no such thing as a person

There is no such thing as a person. There are only restrictions and limitations. The sum total of these defines the person. The person merely appears to be, like the space within the pot appears to have the shape and volume and smell of the pot. - Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj

All those who proclaim their own greatness and uniqueness are not jnanis

All those who proclaim their own greatness and uniqueness are not jnanis. They are mistaking some unusual development for realisation. The jnani shows no tendency to proclaim himself to be a jnani. He considers himself to be perfectly normal, true to his real nature. Proclaiming oneself to be an omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent deity is a clear sign of ignorance. - Nisargadatta Maharaj

Two kinds of knowledge - Mundaka Upanishad

Two kinds of knowledge are to be known – the higher and the lower. The Rig, Yajur, Sama, & Atharva, the Phonetics, Rituals, Grammar, Etymology, Metrics, & Astrology are the lower. That by which the imperishable is perceived is the higher. - Mundaka Upanishad

You may know all the right words, quote the scriptures, be brilliant in your discussions and yet remain a bag of bones. Or you may be inconspicuous and humble, an insignificant person altogether, yet glowing with loving kindness and deep wisdom. - Nisargadatta Maharaj

About Nisargadatta Maharaj

Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj was an Indian spiritual teacher and philosopher of Advaita (Nondualism), and a Guru, belonging to the Navnath Sampradaya. Sri Nisargadatta, with his direct and minimalistic explanation of non-dualism, is considered the most famous teacher of Advaita since Ramana Maharshi. In 1973, the publication of his most famous and widely-translated book, "I AM THAT", an English translation of his talks in Marathi by Maurice Frydman, brought him worldwide recognition and followers.

According to Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj, the purpose of spirituality is simply to know who you are. His discussions are not for academic scholars. He is a rebellious spirit, abrupt in his style of discussion, provocative, and immensely profound, cutting to the core and wasting little effort on inessentials. He talked about the 'direct way' of knowing the Final Reality, in which one becomes aware of one's original nature through mental discrimination, breaking the mind's false identification with the ego, knowing that "You are already That".
