This book is a live satsang with Satguru Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj, covering rare and unpublished conversations with Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj which have been transcribed by his ‘evening’ translator, Mohan Gaitonde, who had the privilege of being with Him from 1979 to 1981.

Self-Love - Nisargadatta Maharaj - Zen Publications

Self-Love
The Original Dream
Translated By Mohan Gaitonde

Shri Nisargadatta Maharaj was one of the most significant spiritual teachers of Non-Duality of his time. His powerful non-dual teachings continue to impact spiritual seekers from all over the world, decades after his passing. Maharaj spoke in his mother tongue, Marathi, and a translator would then translate his words into English. It goes without saying that the translator had to be finely tuned not only to Maharaj’s teachings but also to the subtle nuances of his language, his singular vocabulary of spiritual terms and his distinctive teaching idiom.

Those who had the good fortune of being in Maharaj’s presence reiterate that the intensity of his teaching was at its peak in the last five years before he shed his body. In those years, a relatively young disciple, Shri Dinkar Kshirsagar, sat at Maharaj’s satsangs with a notebook. Every time Maharaj said something which impacted him – it could be a sentence or an entire chunk of conversation – Dinkar-ji would jot it down faithfully, making note of the exact Marathi words used by Maharaj. Though he did not jot down every single word spoken by Maharaj during satsang, his meticulous unfiltered ‘excerpts’ comprised the very essence of the Living Teaching manifesting through Maharaj. They accurately reflected Maharaj’s intensity, his steadfast rootedness in the Self and his utterly natural, intention-less compassion for the spiritual seeker.

These talks were first published in Marathi in a book titled Atmaprem. They were subsequently translated into English by Shri Mohan Gaitonde, Maharaj’s ‘evening’ translator, who had the privilege of being with him from 1979 to 1981. This translation is made special by one outstanding fact: years of  intuitively translating Maharaj, and that too in his presence, bestowed upon Gaitonde-ji an invaluable gift – an ‘ear’ for Maharaj’s voice and tone. In other words, for his subtlest nuance. For spiritual seekers, keen on accessing Maharaj’s original teachings, this has indeed turned out to be a wonderful gift.

Nisargadatta Maharaj
The Earliest Discourses (Meditations from 1954-56)
Translated by Mohan Gaitonde

Nisargadatta Maharaj started speaking sometime in the early 1950s. Initially he would speak on popular scriptures like Sage Eknath’s Bhagwat and Sage Ramdas’ Dasbodh. A few years later the subject matter of his talks spontaneously broadened up and by mid-1950s Maharaj was speaking less about the scriptures and more from his direct experience. Maharaj used to say, ‘I am not speaking these words; they are coming from the Absolute. Just as you hear them, I too am their witness.’

In 1954 Shankarrao Bajirao Dhaygude, one of Maharaj’s senior disciples, started noting down Maharaj’s discourses in their original language, Marathi. His jottings filled up five notebooks. He later shared these 45 discourses with his friend and Guru Bandhu Shri Dinkar Kshirsagar who edited them slightly, taking great care “not to add our own concepts to the text.”

These talks were first published in Marathi as ‘Sadguru Nisargadatta Maharaj Yanchi Durmil Nirupane’. These were then translated into English by Shri Mohan Gaitonde, Maharaj’s ‘evening’ translator, into the present work.

Shower of Grace
Meditations with Shri Nisargadatta Maharaj
Jayashri Gaitonde

For over two decades Shri Nisargadatta Maharaj gave discourses at five o’clock every evening at his home in Mumbai. Smt. Jayashri Gaitonde found these talks so interesting that she resolved to try her utmost not to skip a single one. Maharaj spoke in Marathi, the local language of Bombay city, and generally someone reliable would be chosen by Maharaj to translate his words into English.

At that time there were no tape recorders available at the venue so Jayashri-ji decided to take down meticulous notes of Maharaj’s meditations, as they were spoken in Marathi, for her own use. Later, after Maharaj passed away, she decided to jot down these meditations in a notebook. These were published in Marathi as Amrutvarsha. The book you hold in your hands is the English translation of Amrutvarsha.

Maharaj spoke spontaneously and effortlessly. His powerful words, bearing the rare authority of the Self-realized, seared their way into your consciousness, peeling layer after layer of ignorance to reveal the Truth. His Teaching was profound yet simple and direct. All it required was attentive listening; it prescribed neither any spiritual practice nor any ritual.

The meditations in this book bring alive the vibrancy of Maharaj’s words and chip away at the false sense of ‘I Am-ness’ which is at the root of all ignorance. As Maharaj would pointedly ask his listeners, “Are we not, before knowing that we are?”

About Nisargadatta Maharaj

Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj was an Indian spiritual teacher and philosopher of Advaita (Nondualism), and a Guru, belonging to the Navnath Sampradaya. Sri Nisargadatta, with his direct and minimalistic explanation of non-dualism, is considered the most famous teacher of Advaita since Ramana Maharshi. In 1973, the publication of his most famous and widely-translated book, "I AM THAT", an English translation of his talks in Marathi by Maurice Frydman, brought him worldwide recognition and followers.

According to Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj, the purpose of spirituality is simply to know who you are. His discussions are not for academic scholars. He is a rebellious spirit, abrupt in his style of discussion, provocative, and immensely profound, cutting to the core and wasting little effort on inessentials. He talked about the 'direct way' of knowing the Final Reality, in which one becomes aware of one's original nature through mental discrimination, breaking the mind's false identification with the ego, knowing that "You are already That".
