The Self which pervades all things - Shvetashvatara Upanishad

The Self which pervades all things, which is the root of self-knowledge and austerity – that is the Truth, the highest mystic doctrine. - Shvetashvatara Upanishad

सर्वव्यापिनमात्मानं क्षीरे सर्पिरिवार्पितम् ।
आत्मविद्यातपोमूलं तद्ब्रह्मोपनिषत् परम् ॥

It pervades, all states, but it is not a state of something else. It is entirely uncaused, independent, complete in itself, beyond time and space, mind and matter.
- Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj

You are neither born; nor will die.

Birth and death are nothing but the beginning and ending of a stream of movements in consciousness, interpreted as events in space-time. You are neither born; nor will die. - Nisargadatta Maharaj

It is your private dream world - Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj

Your world of desires and their fulfilments, of fears and their escapes, is definitely not my world. It is your private dream world. My only reaction is to ask you to stop dreaming. - Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj

Nothing that you perceive can be you

If the parts of a car are replaced one by one every day, would that be the same car or different? The cells of a human body are continuously getting replaced. So, is it the same body you have every day?

"Discover all that you are not - body, feelings, thoughts, time, space, this or that - nothing concrete or abstract which you perceive can be you." - Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj.

Where is then that person? - Brihadaranyaka Upanishad

When the speech of this dead person enters into the fire, breath into the air, the eye into the sun, the mind into the moon, the hearing into space, into the earth the body, into the ether the self, into the shrubs the hairs of the body, into the trees the hairs of the head, when the blood and the seed are deposited in the water, where is then that person? - Brihadaranyaka Upanishad

If the person is no more, what then is rebirth, heaven, or hell ?

"When the body is no more, the person disappears completely without return, only the witness remains and the Great Unknown." - Nisargadatta Maharaj

How do you and me see the same illusion?

If everything is an illusion, how do you and me see the same illusion? From the sun's perspective, sunrise and sunset does not exist; it is an illusion. But yet, people see sunsets. If you and me see a sunset from two different places, would that be the same illusion or different?

"When a number of people are asleep, each dreams his own dream. Only on awakening, the question of many different dreams arises, and dissolves when they are all seen as dreams, as something imagined." - Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj

I do not want meek and humble disciples

I do not want meek and humble disciples, I want them to be powerful, as I am. I do not make disciples, I make Gurus. - Nisargadatta Maharaj

Once you realise that the world is your own projection, you are free of it

Once you realise that the world is your own projection, you are free of it - Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj

This relative ‘knowledge’ merges in the no-knowing state of the Absolute

This relative ‘knowledge’ merges in the no-knowing state of the Absolute. This temporary condition of ‘I-know’ and ‘I-know-that-I-know’, then merges into that eternal state of ‘I-do-not-know’ and ‘I-do-not-know-that-I-do-not-know’. - Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj

Reincarnation exists only so long as there is ignorance

What is birth and death but the beginning and the ending of a stream of events in consciousness? It is all misunderstanding and misuse. Wake up, go beyond, live really. - Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj

Reincarnation exists only so long as there is ignorance. There is really no reincarnation at all, either now or before. Nor will there be any hereafter. This is the truth. - Sri Ramana Maharshi | Be As You Are – by David Godman (1985) ISBN 0-14-019062-7 - Chapter 18

About Nisargadatta Maharaj

Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj was an Indian spiritual teacher and philosopher of Advaita (Nondualism), and a Guru, belonging to the Navnath Sampradaya. Sri Nisargadatta, with his direct and minimalistic explanation of non-dualism, is considered the most famous teacher of Advaita since Ramana Maharshi. In 1973, the publication of his most famous and widely-translated book, "I AM THAT", an English translation of his talks in Marathi by Maurice Frydman, brought him worldwide recognition and followers.

According to Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj, the purpose of spirituality is simply to know who you are. His discussions are not for academic scholars. He is a rebellious spirit, abrupt in his style of discussion, provocative, and immensely profound, cutting to the core and wasting little effort on inessentials. He talked about the 'direct way' of knowing the Final Reality, in which one becomes aware of one's original nature through mental discrimination, breaking the mind's false identification with the ego, knowing that "You are already That".
